Vascular Surgery

Vascular surgery is a medical specialty focused on the diagnosis, treatment, and management of diseases and conditions affecting the blood vessels, including arteries, veins, and lymphatic systems. Vascular surgeons are trained to perform surgeries and other interventions to address vascular conditions that can affect circulation and organ function, often preventing serious complications like stroke, heart attack, or limb amputation.

Vascular Surgery Specialties

General Vascular Surgery

Objective: To diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions affecting the arteries, veins, and lymphatic vessels.

Examples: Management of aortic aneurysms, varicose veins, and peripheral artery disease (PAD).

Endovascular Surgery

Objective: To perform minimally invasive procedures to treat vascular conditions, using catheters and other instruments inserted through small incisions.

Examples: Angioplasty and stent placement for peripheral artery disease (PAD), endovenous laser therapy (EVLT) for varicose veins, and aneurysm repair using endovascular stent grafts.

Aortic Surgery

Objective: To treat conditions affecting the aorta, including aneurysms, dissections, and occlusions.

Examples: Aortic aneurysm repair (open and endovascular), aortic dissection repair, and aortic bypass surgery.

Carotid Artery Surgery

Objective: To prevent stroke by treating blockages in the carotid arteries, which supply blood to the brain.

Examples: Carotid endarterectomy to remove plaque buildup, and carotid artery stenting.

Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD)

Objective: To treat blockages or narrowing of the arteries outside the heart, often in the legs, leading to poor circulation.

Examples: Surgical bypass for leg arteries, angioplasty with stent placement, and vein grafting.

Venous Surgery

Objective: To treat conditions affecting the veins, including varicose veins, venous insufficiency, and deep vein thrombosis (DVT).

Examples: Sclerotherapy, vein stripping, laser therapy for varicose veins, and thrombectomy for DVT.

Dialysis Access Surgery

Objective: To create access points for hemodialysis in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD).

Examples: Arteriovenous (AV) fistula creation, AV grafting, and dialysis catheter placement.

Lymphatic Surgery

Objective: To treat disorders affecting the lymphatic system, which can lead to fluid buildup and swelling.

Examples: Lymphatic bypass surgery, lymph node dissection, and treatment for lymphedema.

Trauma and Emergency Vascular Surgery

Objective: To treat acute vascular injuries caused by trauma or other emergencies.

Examples: Management of traumatic arterial injuries, bleeding control, and vascular repair after accidents.

Vascular Access Surgery for Dialysis

Objective: To create and maintain vascular access for patients requiring hemodialysis.

Examples: Creation of arteriovenous fistulas, grafts, and central venous catheters for dialysis.

Endovenous Laser Therapy (EVLT)

Objective: To treat varicose veins using laser energy to close abnormal veins.

Examples: EVLT for large varicose veins, laser treatment for spider veins, and radiofrequency ablation.
